Painting In Memory of a Yellow Labrador Rescue Dog

Jade's family adopted her as an adult from a rescue group despite knowing she had numerous health problems. They fell in love with her and gave her all the support she needed. As a memorial to her sweet spirit (and surprise birthday present her "Dad"), I was commissioned to paint this dog portrait.

This painting was a challenge because the reference photo was so small - her head was barely 1" square. She was a very light cream-colored yellow Lab with a full, thick coat; very overweight and sitting in the snow on a bright sunny day in the reference photo (hence her eyes half closed). When I enlarged it the whole thing turned into a white blob. It was hard to find her in there! But it was her family's favorite photo, so how could I refuse? It took a little longer than some, but I am pleased with the end result. More importantly, her family is thrilled. It was my honor to preserve her image for them.

Black Lab Painting - A Rescue Dog has a Happy Christmas

This black Labrador portrait painting is a surprise Christmas gift, so if you recognize him - shhhhh! Don't tell! It's funny that I feel pretty safe about posting it because it's for my husband and he does not read my blog. He already knows everything I'm up to. Heh heh, or so he thinks.

This is our rescue dog, Butch. If you've been following along you have probably read Butch's sad story by now. Click on his name here if not. He squeezed his way into my husband's heart despite much resistance and now they are inseparable.

Butch does not swim, but he loves to walk in the water right up to his chin. I think it makes his arthritic hips feel good and I know it strengthens his muscles without abusing his joints, so I'm glad he likes it. The painting is from once such day as Butch stood deep in our muddy pond, sparkling wet in the sun. He has very sweet deep brown eyes. I had to paint this on the sly as hubby came and went. That was quite a feat - I think he will like it though, so it will all be worthwhile.

It is too late to schedule any new dog portrait paintings for Christmas this year, I have 3 more in the works right now. Dog Portrait Painting, A Memorial Gift to Treasure

Meet Misty, a mixed breed girl who knows her own mind and isn't afraid to ask for what she wants. Can you see that in her eyes? Good-bye to my sweet old yellow Lab, Marius

OtterTail Marius 12 June 1997 - 28 September 2011. I have been truly blessed to have spent the last 14 years, 3 1/2 months with this sweet, gentle soul - my beloved boy, Marius. He was beautiful to the end. His soft expression attracted admiration from Labrador lovers everywhere we went his whole life. I spent his last day sitting beside him and feeding him everything he loved until my kind vet came here after work and we said "good-bye". He is over Rainbow Bridge now where he was met by his best friend, Oberon. Obi has been waiting for him and I could see him bouncing with joy at their reunion. Godspeed my Babycake.

New Black Lab Puppy Joins the OtterTail Pack

I am so pleased to introduce a wonderful new puppy that joined our pack on August 19th. His call name is Tonto, inspired by fond memories I have of watching The Lone Ranger as a kid. I admired the intrepid side kick for his loyalty, crafty skills and keen intuition. Tonto means "wild one" in Potawatomi Indian and kemasahbee means "faithful companion" - both fitting for a wonderful Labrador dog.

My Tonto is a black Labrador Retriever, now 9 weeks old, who has potential to grow into a fine show dog. He was bred by Susan Bennington of Moonlit Labradors. For me that makes "Moondoggie" a ready-made nickname (I was also a fan of Gidgit). I have not decided on his AKC registered name yet.

Tonto is smart and sweet and learning many new things each day. I feel it is of utmost importance to spend time training my puppies, introducing them to new things and establishing our relationship from the first day I get them around 8 weeks old (I started younger when I bred them myself). This is their critical learning period. Those first 4 months of life are the most important for influencing a puppy. Care and training given during the critical learning periods pays off more than any other time in their lives. Tonto is off to a good start. I hope to take videos of his progress. Chocolate Labrador Painting - Portrait of a Cute Brown Lab Boy

The problem with dogs is that they touch our hearts, dig deep into the core of our lives, and then, having made us eager to share in their joy and love, leave us all too quickly. Dog should live forever! Well, they do in my heart and in my own little way, they do in my paintings.

My latest portrait is a chocolate Labrador painting of a handsome young boy name Scandal. His registered name is Moonlit's National Inquirer and he is bred and owned by Susan Bennington of Moonlit Labradors. The portrait painting was an experimental shift in style for me, being a bit more detailed and tighter than my usual more abstracted portraits. It is always fun to experiment, especially when the results are rewarding. I gave this painting to Susan as a gift - she loves it too! Scandal is still a young boy who has a life full of show wins and pretty girls ahead of him. I predict the day will come when Susan reflects on this youthful time and is thankful for the memory this painting will bring.

Regular readers may remember Scandal from last December when he was here for Labrador show puppy training. He spent 2 weeks at OtterTail Puppy Camp and was a fabulous student. He left us to begin his show career the next weekend, winning those classes and many more, then on to Lab specialty shows including The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac, the biggest Labrador show in the world, where he won both his sweepstakes class and regular class. How to Help a Rescue Dog Adapt to a New Home

As regular readers know, I sometimes foster dogs for rescue groups or take dogs in on my own that need a new home. I get lots of questions about behavior issues from rescue dog adopters and from many others who have taken in homeless dogs. There is one line of thinking that causes a lot of well-meaning people to get off to a rough start. I decide to share some thoughts about it here.

New dogs adjust best when they are told specifically what to do - not given the freedom to figure it out for themselves. Dogs like rules. Dogs like structure and routine. That is a lifestyle that makes them comfortable. It is people who want to give dogs free rein to "just be good" with no instruction thinking that will make the dog happy and "rescued". That is a bit negligent about teaching the new dog how to adjust. Adopting is not rescuing - helping the dog adjust and become a calm, happy companion is the real rescue and that takes time and effort.

Until the dog is fully integrated into the routine of your lifestyle all that freedom mostly adds stress to the new dog's life. You don't ever need to be mean about giving instruction and establishing discipline (aka rules) - just the opposite. You want to be calmly in control like a teacher to a new student who is entering the classroom mid-term. Tell them, show them, fit them in to the way that class works by giving clear, helpful direction. Or imagine if you went to give a talk to some group at a strange place where you did not know anyone. Most of us would feel more comfortable if a person in charge met us as we came in, told us where to park our gear, where to sit, what the schedule would be, etc. Not just let you walk in and be "given the freedom" to figure it out for yourself. That's not doing you a favor.

I love analogies -- I hope this helps make what I am saying more clear. The instructors are not mean - they are calm and in control. That is what gives you reassurance and confidence and helps you relax and be able to fulfill your role. If they were agitated and bossy you would not feel as good. Dogs are not so different in that respect except that many will feel the need to take control if no one else does. Or the stress of the instability and lack of direction will push them into acting out aggressively, sometimes because they are simply insecure.

So, don't think of discipline as a bad thing. Discipline with clear rules and instructions is what new dogs need. After some time a routine will be established and the new dog will understand her role - where she fits in. Then she can earn more freedom because she will know how to handle it, she will know what to do that makes everyone happy.

As I always say, train them as much as you can so they can have more freedom. Untrained, undisciplined dogs who do not receive direction are not freer or happier. Give them instruction, explain / train them what to do, put the time in - they are worth it!

Two Labradors Turn 14 years old - Senior dogs celebrate

Happy Birthday Marius and Eponine! Marius is a yellow Lab boy and Eponine is a black Labrador girl, littermates from the last puppies I bred under my OtterTail Labradors kennel name. I am lucky and thankful to have them both still here 14 years later. I put together this movie of Eponine having her typical daily fun the past few weeks. I can't help but smile every time I see her bouncy trot and glowing smile. Both old senior Labradors have had some health issues this year and Marius has trouble walking these days. He still enjoys every meal and treat from his comfy big bed in the middle of our great room. Eponine had to have many teeth removed due to a hidden infection in her gums, but she healed quickly. She gained a new nickname - Gummy Bear. Marius and Eponine have been a joy since the day they were born - Wonderful Labradors in heart and spirit through and through. Happy Birthday, my sweets. The pleasure is mine!!

Remembering 9-11 on this historic day

I had the honor of being commissioned to create several tributes to canines involved with the 9-11 tragedy. In memory I am posting pics on this historic day. First, I created a Labrador Retriever sculpture plaque in memory of NY PAPD Labrador, Sirius, who perished in the basement of the towers that day. It was presented to his surviving partner (Officer David Lim) by his breeder/donater (Pat Gadaleta).

Twice I was honored to create custom hand-painted silk scarves for brave women who participated in search and rescue at the towers in NYC immediately following 9-11. Amazingly they both had black german shepards. Here is a picture of one of the scarves. It was specifically requested that I include the twin towers still standing. The first scarf was commissioned by FEMA US&R handler Jen in honor of her black GSD partner Taboo. The second was a custom order by Rose in tribute to her partner, Logan. His name and badge number were a subtle inclusion on two of the buildings. Still amazing to me that I should be found and contacted by two such brave women with so much in common!! I continue to be grateful to them for their service.

Lab Dog Proud Moments at the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty Show

Nissa did herself proud at the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac specialty show last week. The world's largest Labrador dog show was held in Frederick, Maryland over 4 busy days (plus an afternoon for a match before the big event). There were over 1100 Labradors in attendance for close to 1600 entries! The first 2 days of the show brought torrential rain, flooding the ground and leading to deep, sticky mud. Despite the miserable conditions my chocolate muffin placed 2nd in her Novice B obedience class with a 194.5 and won her rally Excellent A class with a 98, breaking a tie with fast time. It was a long, cold, wet day and we were both happy to get warm and dry back in our hotel room! That finished her RE title.

The second day Nissa made me very proud with her hard work. The mud was worse from all of the traffic in the same paths the day before, but she was a hard-working girl! Nissa won her obedience Novice B class. Nothing coming easy, we had to do an extra heeling routine in the mess when there was a tie (only 3 of us qualified, so it was not expected!). We won the run-off to finish her CD title with a 196+. Now she is officially Lobuff OtterTail Noble Nissa, RE, CD.

We had fun watching the rest of the show. I was happy to see my puppy students showing off. Chocolate Labrador, Scandal, won both his sweepstakes class and his regular class. He is destined to be a star! Black Lab, Jagger, made the cut in his sweepstakes class and placed 3rd in a very competitive 6-9 month old black puppy regular class. Super proud of how he showed himself! After all the excitment we headed home tired but very satisfied. Plus, we won some really neat loot!!

Labrador Girls Continue Their Winning Ways

Black Labrador Tallulah and chocolate Lab Nissa had a big day at the dog show and deserve to be sleeping it off back at home. Both girls made me proud with their performances at the Syracuse dog show on Friday. Tallulah got the early start by winning the first class of the day - Rally Excellent B, which she won with a score of 99 points. Once again I am obliged to admit the 1 point deduction was my handler error! I patted my leg once. It was totally unnecessary and I realized as soon as I had done it, but too late - it's not allowed at that level. I appreciate that Tallulah continues to put up with my mistakes as she rarely makes any in the show ring. She earned 1st place on all three of her RE legs with scores of 99 and 100. She so loves to show off and is sure that everyone in the building has come just to meet her! This leg finishes Tallulah's last AKC Rally title (first RN, next RA, last RE). She is now officially WhitSprgs OtterTail Tallulah, CD, RE. Conventionally we drop the lower level titles from the name as each more advanced title in the same discipline is earned. She has a RN and RA as well.

Chocolate Labrador Nissa was in the second class of the morning, Rally Excellent A. The "A" level is for dogs who have not yet earned other obedience titles or more advanced rally titles. Nissa won her class and I caught myself making another mistake for 3 points off. I think I will get better at this with experience! Later in the day Nissa was entered in a very competitive novice obedience class of 22. There were many wonderful routines with 17 dogs qualifying. Nissa earned 195 points out of 200 which was good enough to tie for fourth. I never like run-offs and I bumbled with poor footwork on this one, so we lost the tie due to my silly feet. It didn't matter to me. I was very proud of Nissa's good work. I am not one to ask my dogs to be perfect when I know I make many mistakes myself. Yet, we all work hard and have fun and, for me, that is the spirit intended for all performances when dogs and handlers work together.

Next stop - Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty Show where we plan to finish Nissa's RE and CD. It's a fabulous show - if you love labs, it's the place to be!!

Black Labrador Puppy Training for the Show Ring

Meet Moonlits Rolling Stone, aka Jagger. He came to me as a 7-month old boy ready for my 2-week training camp to prepare him for the dog show conformation ring. All of the show ring preparation I do is by capturing or shaping behaviors with clicker training. As always, Jagger learned the meaning of the clicker and began working on meaningful eye contact on his first afternoon here. This picture was taken on the morning of his third day. Visiting puppies live in my house with the rest of my own dogs, so there are rules to learn that have nothing to do with the show ring and we start those within the first few minutes of arrival as well. No busting into or out of the house or gates, be respectful of the other dogs (especially the oldies), no taking anything that is not a dog toy, eliminate outside, wait patiently while I prepare meals and eat only from your own bowl, go in your crate quietly when asked, no begging, no pulling or weaving on leash -- lots of what I consider to be basic manners, but many dogs do not know.

The show training happens throughout the day as I capture behaviors he offers. We start small and shape what each puppy gives into what is needed to be a classy show dog. Jagger is the sensitive type who needed his self-confidence boosted so we worked slowly the first few days, concentrating on bringing out his personality and helping him feel comfortable. Each puppy is different so I tailor my steps to fit the individuals. Jagger learned all of the things chocolate Labrador puppy, Scandal mastered and left here feeling much more confident and proud of himself for knowing how to do what was expected. We created the Jagger Movie to show some of what he had accomplished. Now he will go out in the real world to practice and build fun experiences in the breed ring. Be proud, Jagger!

Painted Furniture Donation for a Good Cause

I have been painting furniture for the Yates County ARC "Chair-ish" Auction for several years now. This year I was given this nice cabinet to add any design I like. Since I mostly paint dogs it is fun to do something different now and then.

The possibilities seem endless as with each new furniture shape I spend even more time trying to decide what to paint than actually doing it. Then, no matter how much I plan ahead the projects take on a new direction as my brush touches the surface. I like these jobs that can be so free to float wherever the paint and my momentary whims take them. Yes, sometimes at the end I think I would have done it differently had I followed a plan to get where I got, but these are learning experiences and I enjoy them. It seems those who bid at the auction enjoy the finished products too.

The painting on this cabinet was inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh designs, but it went it's own way as I got going. I let it flow and intended to use a variety of colors, but something struck me at this simple green and white stage and I decided to stay with it. I know everyone is not comfortable with a lot of the vivid color I normally am drawn to use, so here's hoping those who prefer a more subdued palette will bid high on this piece and raise lots of funds for non-profit ARC's work.

Ducks Cut in Wood Picture Frame

We started making dog-theme wood frames and products back in the 1980's and they remain popular today. This example is a vertical version of our "3-Ducks" frame. It is made of solid cherry, individually cut by hand with a scroll saw and has a natural oil finish. We have other designs and use a variety of hardwoods with each piece being selected for the particular project. All of my OtterTail Lab Art has evolved over the years in response to customer requests as well as my own shifting interests, yet it remains always inspired by my own dogs. It is a bit nostalgic to see the photo in this frame which was taken in 1989. The Labrador dog I was showing was my OtterTail Beau Buckaroo, Am/Can CD when he was 18 months old - he looks so young. The judge was the well-know Labrador breeder, George Bragaw. Both have been gone for some time now. The show was during the Wine Country circuit in NY with a large entry and tough competition. It was a long time ago and yet I remember it vividly. That is what special pictures can do. They deserve special frames.

Dog Training Tips - Train a Labrador Pup for Showing

Happy Holidays to all! May this special season bring joy and build merry memories for the future. Our holidays have a different twist with the addition of a young dog here for training. This adorable chocolate Labrador is named Scandal and he belongs to Susan Bennington of Moonlit Labradors. Scandal turned 7 months old on Dec. 23rd and is getting ready to start his career as a show dog. He came to us on Dec. 18 specifically for conformation show training. Dogs at our home are all treated as house pets and expected to abide by certain rules, so by my requirements Scandal is learning some other things too.

I consider eye contact to be of utmost importance in my relationships with dogs and I almost always teach that first at the same time that I introduce the dog to clicker training. For dogs in the breed ring getting eye contact on cue is an element of showing well, so it's a great place to start. With all training I break the lessons down into small parts. I consider what things a dog needs to do to show well based on that perfect picture in my mind (and my experience in the breed ring). Here is a partial list of what Scandal has learned in the past 10 days (not necessarily in order):

Make eye contact on cue
Wag your tail
Stand 3-5 feet away from me
Allow me to place your feet
Allow me to look at your teeth
Stay on my left side on lead
Do not weave from side to side on lead or get underfoot
Do not pull on lead
Do not stop to scratch or sniff when trotting
Trot at a steady, even pace
Turn and trot again in the opposite direction
Trot in a large circle and triangular pattern without bumping into me
Look straight ahead while trotting
Keep you head up while trotting
Upon stopping from trotting look up at me and wait (eye contact and tail wagging)
Follow my hand with your eyes (so I can position his head)
Catch a toy -- advanced into catch a treat
Back up on cue

Other non-show things that Scandal has learned this week include:
When a door and gate is opened, make eye contact and wait to be invited through
How to use the dog door
Pee outside
"Leave It!"
"Move"
Do not complain in the crate (still working on that one)
"Easy" - go extra slowly and carefully on lead (e.g., on ice or steep downhill)
Lie quietly while I prepare dog meals
Wait for and eat from your own bowl and do not bother any other dogs as they eat
Don't harass the cat or eat her food
A noise I make means the same thing as a "click" of the clicker

The above is repeated daily as we introduce the next steps:
Stand with your feet in 4-square position - I may teach this earlier or later in the training. It may be more likely to happen naturally as they mature through different growth stages. You can always position their feet if necessary in the ring. I want them to walk naturally into a perfect 4-square. I teach them to move their feet so I can tell them to fix it if they are not properly placed. All of this should give him excellent preparation for his first exciting time at a dog show. For my own dogs I teach them much more - the more, the better is my philosophy. They love to learn and it makes traveling and showing less stressful if you can give them direction and they understand what to do. Plus the more they learn the smarter they get. Yes, I absolutely do teach my show dogs to sit on cue -- that's a topic for another post!

Black Labrador Portrait Painting for Christmas Gift

Here is my last dog portrait painting for 2010. This Labrador painting was commissioned by a girlfriend in tribute to her boyfriend and his beloved black Lab. It will be a surprise Christmas gift. I hope he loves it! I don't think he is a blog reader, so I am safe to say that the dog's name is Fetcher and he is 14 years old. I can tell by the photographs she sent me that he is a wonderful hunting companion and is said to be still going strong. Good wishes that you may continue on with what you love, Fetcher! It was my pleasure to paint such a special old boy.

Just finishing this latest black dog portrait painting. Her name is Brisket. She is probably a Lab mix, but her family loves her no matter what she is made of! Dog Rally Obedience, New title, New starts for 2 great Labrador Retrievers

Tallulah, Nissa and I enjoyed our trip to the Mid-Jersey Labrador Retriever specialty show. There were 2 days of showing with 2 separate rally trials and obedience trials. I am proud to say my girls both won both of their rally classes; four tries, four blue ribbons. Tallulah was wonderful getting us going for our first time in Rally Excellent. She did it all easily, winning with 100 points and a fast time the first day and 99 points the second day. Nissa had me a bit nervous after refusing to jump at our last trial. She needed one more leg to earn her Rally Advanced title. Approaching tentatively, she started to by-pass the jump on Thursday, but in Rally you are allowed a second chance and, after a moment of bonding eye-contact, she jumped with gusto. Hurrah!! That left her eligible to move up to Rally Excellent for Friday. With little time to warm up between dogs I gave her a quick pep talk and off we went. No issue this time, she jumped both jumps on the course with confidence and enthusiasm. It was a great way to start the Excellent level. We'll take the winter off and aim to finish those titles in 2011.

Unfortunately, Nissa made up a new issue for the obedience ring. She had good scores going both days (190.5 and 195 out of 200), but she failed to come on the first call - an automatic NQ. She came beautifully and did a perfect finish on my second call both times. You could see her lean forward as if to start, then correct herself back into a sit, waiting to be sure I really had called. First day I thought it had something to do with the leaf blower I was shouting over, but in retrospect I think it is because I had corrected her for breaking a WAIT when practicing rally a few days before and, being the sensitive sort, that was on her mind. I know it is my fault one way or another when they are working so well and make a mistake, so I'll fix it and we will get her Companion Dog title next year. Still proud of you, Nissa. And Tallulah, it is always a joy to go into the ring with such a show-off!

Advanced Rally Obedience, 2 Labradors and 3 days

My black Lab, Tallulah, and her best buddy chocolate Labrador, Nissa, had a big weekend working toward Rally Advanced titles. We were entered 3 days with great expectations for our first try at this level of rally. These 2 girls and I are learning the Rally ropes together - as usual, I think they are getting it better than I am.

The first morning brought us a wet, cold start, but everyone seemed positive at the show and our judge was very pleasant. Tallulah went first in Rally Advanced B since she already has her Companion Dog obedience title. She did a perfect job and I was most proud of her, but as I exited the ring the judge told me I had made a mistake on one sign by having her sit at heel when no sit was called for. Opps!! That is a 10-point handler error. So we received a score of 90 points out of 100 and Tallulah was jipped out of winning the class. Bad Mommy, good Tallulah. Nissa went a short time later in the Rally Advanced A class and I had a chance to redeem myself. She was perfect too and won her class with a 100 point routine. We got home just in time for the torrential rains to start -- and on they went all night.

Day 2 brought drier air, but mud mud everywhere. My girls made me proud again, both winning their classes. Tallulah got the perfect 100 point score she deserved the day before and Nissa won with 99 points. Tallulah decided she will keep me.

Day 3 was cold, but pleasant. Tallulah was great once again, placing 2nd in her class and finishing her RA title. Way to go, Tallulah Bear!! Many dogs did not show up, probably due to the site conditions. That left me running with only 1 dog between my 2 and foolishly I did not take the time I needed to help my Nissa get ready. She started out great, but faltered mid-test at the jump. It's not like her to refuse and I did not make good use of the handling that is allowed in rally. We took a second try, but without success. We were allowed to complete the run and the rest was perfect. The judge and stewards asked me why it happened and after explaining I thought it was due to my hurrying and no proper warm-up the judge scolded me for not asking for a few minutes before my run. As I told her, I didn't know I could do that. Live and learn. So, Nissa will have to try for one more leg another time and I hope I will be the better handler that she deserves!

Painted Ceiling - Master Bedroom project

Our new master bedroom addition is a project that is still in progress, but here is the completed painted ceiling. It was fun to do and I was delighted when I showed Jim a few colors and he said he loved the purple! Who would have guessed?! It was difficult to photograph, so I took a few sample shots to show some closer views.

The painting was done very free-hand and without any plan. I made it up as I went adding color and textures until I got something I liked. I have found that is the best policy for any of the faux finishes I have done on walls -- If you don't like it just keep adding more until you do. This celing is much more dramatic than any house painting I have done before, but the philosophy still worked for me. I never use a roller when I paint, just don't like them. So even when I make a solid color wall I use a brush with free flowing stokes in every direction and thinned paint. The benefits of this method are that I get good, even coverage after a few easy coats. I do not have the roller texture and missed, alligator spots, each coat dries very quickly and - important for me - it is much easier to get stray dog hairs out of the thin coats. I find it a much more freeing, fun and creative way to paint a wall than the rigid rollering and cutting in of edges. I mostly use a good 3" brush and mix my own colors from "junk" paint that others return. Other size brushes, sponges and rags, and my artist acrylics enter the scene when inspiration strikes.

The walls of this room appear solid colored at first, but there is a subtle, gradual blending from the ceiling gray-green through yellow and down into a peach. I had not planned that, but I like it the way it is so it can stay like that for now. I enjoy how the colors appear to change as the light of the day changes.

This is partial explanation for my not posting more completed art lately. I am bound and determined to move into this addition within the next week. Still have a big cement floor project to complete with a lot of unknowns - learning as I go. Wish me luck!

Art Donated for Seneca Pure Waters, Diving Black Labrador Dog Life Ring

Here is another item I have painted as a donation for a fund-raiser. This time it is for Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, a group dedicated to preserving Seneca Lake and, with it, our drinking water. They chose to have a life saver ring as the item to be painted and auctioned at an up-coming event. I must admit it has proven a challenging surface to paint. I hope everyone will like my design of a Black Labrador Retriever diving in to Save Our Seneca. That is the motto for this event and the letters SOS were a required element in the design. I haven't decided if it is finished yet - I may change the letters and possibly add a few other touches. I am looking forward to the artists reception to see what others did with their rings. All of them will be on display at venues in Geneva and Watkins Glen, NY as well as online on the SLPWA website. I have used my diving Labrador dog design on many wood items. It is nice to use it in a black Lab painting and I'm sure I will use it again, perhaps a painting on canvas next time.

Happy Birthday to the Oldest Labs in our Pack

Marius and Eponine celebrated their 13th birthday on Sat., 12 June. It was a miserable hot and humid day, so the party was mostly sedate with all Labs enjoying rawhides in the shade of the big trees. Here are some old pictures of my "babies". These two lovelies were the last puppies I kept from the last litter I bred. What will I ever do without them??

Eponine was a cutie as a pup and just as cute in her prime as these photos show. She is still adorable, but a lot more gray. I love watching her swim these days. She lolly-gaggles along barely moving her feet like a slow stroll, but her proper Labrador coat keeps her floating high like a cork. She can't hear much anymore, but otherwise is in pretty good shape and has a daily "go-dog-go" run in the midst of our pack walk.

Marius was a beautiful puppy and grew into a very handsome man who got compliments everywhere we went. He hates having his picture taken and I'm sad to say I have never gotten a really good picture of his best soft, sweet expression. Here he is having fun with his big balls - as a baby puppy and still up to the same silliness many years later. He hasn't played with the ball at all this year, his back is too weak for wild games. He was also diagnosed with Pannus in April, so he has to wear Doggles to protect his eyes on sunny days now. He doesn't like them much and they are not conducive to "ball-mania". Still, with drops his eyes are stable so he can still see enough to get around and most days his back is strong enough for a leisurely walk and drink from the pond. All in all he's a happy guy.

I named these two for favorite characters from "Les Miserables" because I was les miserable myself when I decided that would be my last litter. But I couldn't be happier about the sweet souls I got to share in my life for the past 13 years. I love you 'Ponine and Man-i-kin Babycake. Thanks for being you!

Labradors Help Artist Make Dog Art

A Labrador lover friend has been having a sad time lately and I wanted to make her a special card. She has only met my chocolate Lab Nissa so far, so I let Nissa be the model for this art project. It only took about 5 minutes to clicker train her to rest her chin on my knee and peak up at me, then hold it until the pre-set camera snapped the shot. The cropped "Before" picture is on the left. I digitally added pants and took out the messy background to create the card front "After" picture shown on the right. I thought some of you might enjoy seeing how my Labs and I work together to create my OtterTail Labrador Art. My friend loved the card. Training Tips: Showing Dogs, Teach to Focus on You, Clicker Training

A friend recently asked me about training her show dog to look at her and not focus on or try to grab the bait. There are many steps to training a show dog to free stack and show herself. Here are some basic training tips and a suggestion of how to apply them to this one step.

There are lots of ways to train anything - if one approach doesn't work for you or for one dog you can make up another way as long as you understand the principles. Basically, behaviors that are reinforced are likely to be repeated. The beauty of the clicker - used well - is that it marks the moment in a clear, concise "language". So you only need a second of the good behavior or something that is closer to the desired behavior than what you are getting to begin. You reinforce that and build on it. Think of the click as a camera shutter - take a picture of the moment you want to capture. We've all taken lots of crummy pictures in a row with one or two great ones depending on the exact snap of the camera. Click the clicker as if you were taking that great picture - the one when the dog is doing what you want, even if it only lasts a split second. Catch it with the clicker, then give the treat. You can't deliver a treat or say "good dog" with the same accuracy as you can click and the click becomes extremely meaningful to the dogs -- and they love it because it is so clear. Look at my photos. The picture on the left was what was happening only a few seconds before the picture on the right. The sweet puppy sitting politely would be the one you want to capture with the clicker. It's all about your timing.

Try this for redirecting a dog's focus - put the treats on a table within arm's reach. Problem dog will look at the treats. Wait until she looks at you instead, even if just for a second - click. Then give her one of those treats. It won't take long before she only looks at you and does not bother looking at the treats anymore because looking at the treats gets her nothing. Looking at you gets her clicks and treats.

Work up to taking a treat from the table and holding it in your hand and wait for her to make eye contact. Leave your hand by your side, not up by your face. Don't move it away from her. Close your fist around the treat and don't let her take it. Bump her if you want or just wait until she backs off for a second and looks at you - click and give her the treat. You can repeat that many times a day in all different situations, not just while working on show baiting. She will quickly learn that looking at the treat does not get her anything (if you make sure it doesn't) and trying to take the treat should NEVER result in her getting one. Really, that is just rude and disrespectful anyway, so she should learn that regardless of showing. Trying to take food from your hand gets nothing. As soon as she back her nose away the hand opens and treat is delivered. Ask for a little longer time of not touching before you deliver the click so she learns to maintain the backed off behavior. Build slowly on lots of little successes, lots of repetition. You want to add a short delay fairly soon in the process or you will inadvertently teach her that bumping your hand is what you want. Keep you final goal in mind, then dissect it into little steps. Start with the simplest little step and build up to your goal. Don't worry about what else she is doing while you are working on this - sitting, standing, wagging - doesn't matter. You are only working on getting her focus and nose off of the treat.

You can only teach one thing at a time. You can work on different things, but break up the session so she doesn't get confused. Don't try to work on tail wagging, perfect stacking, eye contact and bait attention all at once. Work on tail wagging, take a little break, then work on eye contact and forget about what the tail is doing. Later you can work on perfect foot placement, but forget about where her tail and eyes are during that session. After she learns each piece you can put it all together. You can make showing fun for her by teaching these things, then giving them to her as little jobs for which she will earn that bait she so dearly wants. She will have more fun and be more focused if she understands how to play the game and knows that she can get that reward by working for you and giving you "the right answers". You are giving her control. You are also giving her knowledge. That is much more exciting to a dog than standing there trying to dive for bait and getting kneed in the chest. It also presents a prettier picture to the judge.

Cement Leaves Add Colorful Sculpture to Deck and Garden

I experimented with making these cement leaves just for fun. I sculpted them last fall and finally got around to painting them a few days ago. I made two of them to remind me of Caladium leaves - plants I have always admired, but have not had much success growing. It was a fun process and I am actually letting some burdock weeds get big this spring so I can cast some "lunker leaves". They will look nice in my garden and, perhaps around a fountain I am considering building next to our porch. Once I set up a casting station I will make enough to sell. Last year I painted a giant Adirondack chair for the Yates County ARC "Chair-ish" auction. This year I got one of the new little tables. It was a fun shape to consider. I changed my mind several times about what I would do, but liked the idea of this pond theme. I was inspired by the colors of spring out my window as I mixed paint and planned for a unique design. I hope it brings them a good high bid at this year's annual auction scheduled for 11 July at Keuka College.

Funny Old Women Pool Walking Watercolor Painting

It's not your age, it's your attitude! And the older you get the more you realize the truth in that saying! I painted this funny little watercolor of two old friends pool walking. It's an activity old women do to keep their joints moving and get some weight bearing exercise without undue strain. My mother pool walks with a group of women in Florida, so I made this watercolor into funny old lady greeting cards for her to share with friends. These ladies know how to live in style, pool walking with their cocktails. Keep your pinkies out! This painting is also available on a variety of products that make great gift ideas for old women. Black Labrador Painting for Lab Rescue - Shadow

This painting is for my new series of dogs that have gone through shelters and/or rescue programs or that I have rescued myself. 25% - 40% of profits from the sale of prints in this series will be donated to Lab Rescue. You may recognize this as our old black Lab foster dog, Shadow, from 2009. The reference photo was taken early in his stay with us and I entitled this black Lab painting "I Rest My Weary Head". Shadow was a serious and grumpy guy when he first moved in with us, but he had been through some trying times. He was also grossly overweight, arthritic and, dealing with so much as a 10 1/2 year old man, he was tired. On this particular day he was beginning to adjust and make himself comfortable in our home. Over the course of the 2 months that he lived with us he transformed into a sweet, happy, affectionate smush. His bum elbow slowed him down, but he loved his daily trip to our Lab swimming pond. He would usually stay there while the rest of us walked the paths of our land or he would head back up the hill where he had a better view to watch us. I hope many dog lovers will feel a connection with this senior black Labrador painting and purchase prints. Chocolate Labrador Wins and Earns First AKC Title

Nissa continued her winning ways by finishing her Rally Novice AKC title with a score of 99 points (out of 100). She completed her title with 3 first place wins, making me very proud of her. Now she is officially Lobuff OtterTail Noble Nissa, RN. We competed at the 4-day long Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty Show last week and had a wonderful time (despite the cold, wind and rain on the day of our rally competition). She also placed 4th in her American Bred class in conformation at LRCP. This is a grand show, once again this year it was the largest Labrador show in the world with over 1000 Labs from far and wide. Definitely a gathering of the creme de la creme. I'm not sure what Nissa will do next - either Rally Advanced or Novice Obedience, but we will have fun training no matter what we do! I did not expect her to do as well as my black Lab and Nissa's mentor, Tallulah, but by gosh, she did it! Good job, Nissa!

Black Labrador Portrait Painting Birthday Surprise

I'd like to share my latest dog portrait commission. Here is Hobie - RIP. She was a rescue dog who taught her family about the special love of a Labrador. This black Labrador Retriever portrait painting was commission by a dog-loving husband as a birthday present surprise for his wife. She doesn't know it yet and I am excited to find out how she likes it next month after her birthday. It has been a very sneaky undertaking conspired by husband, daughter, and other family members. I sure hope she loves it!!

I did her background a little differently than usual. Client wanted a woodsy background, but I found the detail too distracting and it competed with Hobie - the center of interest. So, I took artistic privilege and changed it to this medley of greens. Still has an outdoorsy feel, but not the distraction of unimportant elements. I like to keep my artwork simple and straight-forward. I guess that's the Lab in me! Happily, client loves it and I am pleased with the outcome as well. Now we will just have to keep mum and hope for a great and happy surprise on the big day! Good-bye sweet Hobie. It was nice to spend time with you, but now I have to send you home.

Fun Dog Tips - Training Your Retriever to Deliver to Hand

I regularly see people who throw balls or sticks for their dogs and the dog happily gets the item, but does not give it back or drops it on the ground and encourages the person to pick it up. I figure I am not the retriever, the dog is! There are times when delivering to hand is essential, so I like to make it a habit for my Labs. We particularly enjoy playing ball with a chuck-it (since I throw like a girl at best!).

Here is my quick training tip: Think of the retrieve in "reverse". Instead of "you throw the ball and the dog brings it back and gives it to you" make it be "the dog gives you the ball, you throw it and the dog brings it back". So don't throw the first ball with the chuck-it. Drop it on the ground and encourage the dog to pick it up and deliver it to your hand. The reward is that you load the chuck-it and throw. Dog runs out, gets it, runs back - has a great time. The only way dog can have that fun again is if he hands you the ball. Turn and start to walk away if dog runs off or drops it on the ground (as in "game over"). I use body language to explain "sorry, I can't reach that and won't chase you. The only way to get me to throw it again is if you help by handing me the ball." This works well for my Labs and keeps them very enthusiastic and happy. It also teaches them to always deliver to hand. Throwing a stick or ball at my feet will not work. That's a pattern my naughty husband gets into when he plays with our Labs and I have to "untrain". This is my pain-free remedy. It gives me dogs that work to put items in my hand even when I am not offering. The only bad part? Sometimes my dogs insist on handing me road-kill frogs or wet, dead shrews, or ... But that is why we teach "drop it" - a different cue altogether. Have fun training your dog. It can be a joy for both of you! Black Lab Rescue Foster Dog - February 2010

Meet Brandon aka Brandy. He joined the OtterTail Labrador pack two weeks ago as our first foster dog for 2010. Brandon is a puppy in a big dog suit. It seems he and his brother spent their puppyhoods in an owner's basement or tied outside. By the time they were turning a year old they were big, unruly kids and the owner finally realized they needed training. She did not work with them long before deciding they were too much and they were left at a boarding kennel with instructions to find them a new home. With no further payments for their stay this pair of boys were indeed lucky that the kennel operators are kind-hearted and allowed them both to stay for free until rescue group fosters could be found and transport arranged. The rash of snow storms along the east coast delayed the boys' trip from Georgia to New York for four weeks, but they finally made it.

Brandon has learned a lot since he joined us and he is really getting with the program now. He is a typical Lab teenager, big on the outside and silly on the inside. With us he is getting basic obedience lessons as well as learning general manners and that cats are not for chasing. He is doing great on all counts! It appears he was a thief in his previous home, but being so young he is not committed to it. Yesterday on our walk I unknowingly dropped my hat. When I looked to Brandy he had found it and was carrying it up our hill. As I praised and encouraged him he looked totally nonplussed. "But, I'm stealing this" you could almost hear him say. He started to veer in another direction so I called him with a happy voice and encouraged him to me. Once he arrived I had a whole handful of treats ready and made a quick exchange prying my hat from his mouth before he could think about it too long. He didn't intend to bring it or give it to me, but it worked. He was "good by accident" and earned a great reward. Sometimes those seized opportunities give dogs the greatest lessons and lead to big steps in training progress. From the first day I have only called him to come when he is already on his way so that I was sure he would respond correctly and it would be a fun experience for him. Now he is developing a happy, reliable recall. All in all I think Brandy is a sweet boy who will make someone a very devoted and loving pet if they are willing to continue his training and give him the affection he so enjoys. Keep your fingers crossed that Brandon finds a wonderful forever home soon and can truly begin the new life he deserves.

Custom Dog Art Frame for Award Certificate and Photo

In addition to my OtterTail Lab Art dog paintings I also make a variety of dog theme wood items. My husband helps on these projects so it is a family affair. Here is a custom design I created to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of a Lab and her owner. Black Lab Nell has earned her OTCH (Obedience Trial Champion), MH (Master Hunter title), and several agility titles and she is only 5 years old. They are a busy team!

We call this basic piece our Combination Frame. It is sized to hold a standard 8x10" AKC title certificate in the lower opening and a photo of the title holder in the upper opening. (Of course, you could put photos in both openings instead.) They have been very popular since we started making them in 1992. Purchasing a Combination Frame has become a tradition for many of our customers and we are thrilled to help them celebrate their awards and achievements with our beautiful naturally finished hardwood frames. We typically use maple, cherry and black walnut woods, though may have other fine hardwood choices as well. This example is spalted red maple. All pieces are individually cut with a scroll saw and receive a hand-rubbed natural finish that honors the beauty of the wood. She's Like An Old Friend

This is my Rosemary tree I've had for nearly 20 years. Well, she was a little $2 plant sprig in the beginning. I trained her into this tree form and made a few babies for friends along the way. But she has been a big tree for a long time now and 'abused' in a pot. I put her outside every summer - as long as I can from spring until the temperatures dip regularly into the 20's. I keep thinking I should give her a real vacation and plant her in the ground for a season, but she's so heavy and tight in her pot that I never manage to get it done. As you can guess, I have not repotted her in a long time either. Somehow she forgives my neglect and here she is flowering for the second flush this winter. I do use her regularly, but it would probably be even better if I cut her way back and let new growth fill in. Rosemary makes regular additions to my roasted or fried potatoes. I put it in sauces and salads and of course, she in an important member of our Thanksgiving feasts. Yup, she's like an old friend to me. Always there, always happy and smelling good and easy to please, brightening my cold winter days with dainty blue flowers and my cold winter meals with herbal freshness. If you can't have a pet, at least have a plant :-).

Labrador Retriever Remains Most Popular Dog Breed

The numbers are out and Labrador Retrievers are the AKC's most popular dog breed for the 19th year in a row! That always makes me sad. Of course I think Labs are the most wonderful dogs on the planet, but AKC popularity means many Lab were bred and, unfortunately, many Lab puppies were born in less than optimal conditions. The best way to combat this problem is to buy your Lab puppy from a truly reputable breeder. How do you know? For starters, the best breeders LOVE their dogs. They are not looked upon as livestock or "a means to an end" or simply a money making device. Be an educated shopper. Contact multiple breeders so you have some reference for comparison. Ask lots of questions and - if the breeder cares about their dogs - expect to be asked a lot of questions as well. There are many places online to find out what to ask and understand. Click this link for one list provided by the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac. Why does buying from a reputable breeder help? Good breeders do not produce many puppies each year and they will take their puppies back anytime in their lives if the need arises. These dogs rarely end up in shelters or rescues. They also require spaying or neutering and may sell dogs on limited registration. Supporting the good breeders means less demand for dogs from bad breeders. If there is no mass demand they will no longer waste their efforts on creating "supply".

Another way to bring a Lab into your life is through a rescue organization or directly from a shelter. Adopting such a dog will not help stop the irresponsible breeders, but it can save a deserving soul. Usually you will see Lab mixes rather than purebreds and the purebreds you do find may have been poorly bred. These can all still be wonderful dogs and certainly need and deserve good homes. Be aware that you may adopt a dog with health and/or temperament problems who will need rehabilitation. Your "good deed" is not done the day you bring him home -- rescuing your dog has just begun. There are many rescue group around the country, some taking a variety of breeds and mixes and others specializing. I volunteer for Rudy's Rescue for Labradors and occasionally other groups. Many rescue volunteers are just as protective about where their dogs end up as reputable breeders are, so expect a review process from them as well.

All dogs deserve a good home. I have fostered and directly rescued many. I believe the best thing I can do for the future of the breed I love is to support those breeders who truly care and I look forward to the continued honor of sharing my life with these beautiful, well-bred creatures.

Happy Black Lab Makes Fun Portrait Painting

Here is my latest portrait painting. This smiling black Labrador is living the good life now. A friend of his current owner found him on the side of the road, thin and missing patches of hair. Look at him now - glowing with good health and spreading happiness wherever he goes. It was fun to receive a variety of photos of him from which to choose one for this painting. His joie de vivre was evident in every one of them. I hope you can feel it in this portrait too!

The background is much richer and darker in real life. Not sure why my camera didn't pick it up this time. The reference photo was of this sweet dog trotting down his dock to the water and this painting is traveling to Florida, so I wanted to capture a bit of the tropical colors surrounding his happy life. Will have to have a discussion with my camera.

Dog Gifts, Toys, and Holiday Fun

I hope everyone has had happy and fun holidays! We did and here is a picture with some of the proof. I always get a kick out of how the dogs can find simple pleasures in little things - something I emulate in my own life. Every year I wrap nylabones and other toys for my dogs to open on Christmas morning. This year included 2 boxes with stuffed animals for Tallulah and Nissa who are particularly fond of their stuffed buddies. As you can see, the boxes and wrappings prove to be more fun than the actual presents in the heat of the moment (the 2 new animals from that box thrown aside under the footstool). I always let the dogs make a big mess with wrapping paper and cardboard on Christmas morning. Once they get in the mode they want to help us open every gift, so it's good to have their packages on hand! Twelve year old Eponine is watching from the couch, but she already opened one package herself. Rescue dog Butch couldn't quite believe it, but he got in on the package opening and ripping himself this year (his 2nd Christmas with us). My dogs are so good about not touching anything that isn't theirs all the rest of the year, I like to give them freedom for "the big rip". There's a lot of free fun to be found in an empty cardboard box!

Now we are setting up for a great 2010 - hard to believe it's a new decade already. All of us wish all of you the happiest possible year full of fun, joy in simple pleasures and love every day. Best wishes for a wonderful new year!

Yellow Lab Portrait Painting for Christmas Gift

Jack is my latest Lab portrait painting commission. He will make a very thoughtful Christmas gift to a fiancee'. This yellow Labrador painting is based on a photo of Jack in his younger years. There was some sneaking involved and help from family and friends to find photos from the past. He is an old timer now. I hope the recipient will be very pleased.

Every pet portrait painting I do is a great honor. When you commission me to paint your pet I take it as a trust you have put in me to create a special piece of artwork that will be a keepsake and a symbol of the unique bond you share with your animal. I approach each one with anxious anticipation that my finished painting will fulfill those needs. It may sound funny, but I always ask the pet to help me out as I proceed. Something in a dog's expression will set the tone for the entire painting process and choices I make along the way. I love the little stories you share about the dogs so I get some insight into their personalities before I paint. Jack has a bit of a melancholy expression, but we also found a cuteness together as the painting progressed. It is always a joy for me to see the canvas "come to life". Teaching Tips: Training your dog to come from distractions

People often tell me their dogs won't come when called or if they do, it is only when there are no great distractions. Living in the country we have lots of bunnies, deer, and other wildlife ever tempting our dog friends to chase and leading to potentially dangerous outcomes. Here is an excerpt of an email I sent to the adopter of one of my recent foster rescue dogs (his name is not really Spot):

A bunny or deer running is tough for any dog to resist. It takes lots of practice - practicing correctly - to train a reliable recall with the competing attraction of chasing prey. The best thing to do is to practice lots of happy recalls every day. When you are walking you can back up and call him - "Spot come" - in a pleasant voice. Make it sound inviting and fun and when he comes give him a treat and some affection and then go back to walking. Do that both during the structured training walk time and during the free walk time. Do it in the house any time. Go to a different room or just back up a few steps where you are. Always use the same cue "Spot come" and always make it a rewarding experience. As you practice increase your standards. Expect Spot to respond quicker and come faster. The finish should be that you put your hand on his collar as you praise, pet and give a treat. That teaches that he has to come all the way to you and be touched. As you increase your standards save the best treats for the best responses. For lesser responses still praise him, but make it clear to him that it is better when he responds quickly and/or moves faster to you. Dogs can only learn if the communication is clear. [This is a very important point for all training. It won't work to always say "good dog" for any feeble attempt and job well done. You must make it clear to your dog when one "answer" is better than another or he will never learn to do it better.] Never call Spot to punish him or he will learn that coming is bad. If he does not come when you call, go get him and make him come to you either by guiding by the collar or with the leash. Be nice, but make it happen. Try to have lots of repetitions of happy recalls that end with you touching his collar, then giving him a hug and/or treat, telling him he is wonderful and going on about having fun. Before you go for a walk call Spot to put on his leash. It's another chance for him to come, have his collar touched and then be rewarded with something he loves. Anytime you are going to do anything fun that you know Spot enjoys - sit on the couch, go to bed, eat a meal, go for a ride in the car - call him "Spot come", touch his collar, then invite him to the activity. All of these repetitions will teach him that coming when called is a fun and rewarding exercise and it will also create a habit. Habits help dogs respond automatically, without question - the brain doesn't think about it first. It takes lots of practice doing it right, lots of repetitions. That is how you get a dog that you can call off a deer.

Today's photo is of one of my old rescue dogs, Winston. He definitely needed LOTS of training when he came and seeing him come when called always brings me joy. He is living with good friends now and I'm sure they appreciate the training he received while he was here. Rescue dogs my need more time to "unlearn" past bad habits, but it is well worth the time to teach them!

Yellow Lab Dog Portrait Painting - "Mr. Big"

This is my latest Labrador Retriever portrait painting and it is one of my own much loved dogs. He was born in 1988 in my first litter, the biggest puppy of 8 and he would plow through the other puppies pushing them off Mom's nipples like a big brut, hence naming himself Brutus at a very young age. It did not take long for him to accumulate over 20 nicknames (yes, I counted them all once), including Mr. Big. Shortened to "Big" it fit his personality as well as his size. Big became The Big Ig, Ig, and Iggy, among others, he answered to all of them. Big Brutus had a big ego and a great sense of humor. He was definitely the comedian of the family and he had funny quirks that we still refer to today. He made a particular noise - which I have never figured out how to spell - and it had a particular meaning that my husband and I still imitate to convey that message to each other. The most unlikely of Brutus's nicknames was Muffy, but that fit him too. Under his tough-guy comedian facade he was a sweet softie and if he got upset about anything he turned into a big baby. He had an ear hemotoma at one point and a friend commented that it looked like he was wearing ear muffs. That lead to us calling him Muffy when he got round-headed and submissive - aka "all muffed out". His official name was OtterTail Beau Brutus, CD - son of OtterTail Leela the Hunter, CD and Am/Can Champion Davoeg Silky Beau. Brutus was a wonderful character who enriched our lives beyond measure. He left us at the age of 12, taken quickly by hemangiosarcoma cancer. I painted this portrait as a 60th birthday present for Jim. It will hang next to Dave's dog portrait - Mr. Big's "grasshopper". By the way, that line of hair that makes a ridge from eye to eye is called a cow lick. When it goes along the top of the muzzle (perpendicular to the cow lick) it is called a zipper.

Labrador Dog Show Trophy - Wood Peg Rack

We were honored to be chosen to create the trophies for the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Bare Bones Specialty dog show again this year (LRCP). Here is an example of one of our wooden peg racks with dog designs cut through in silhouette. We call this pattern "Pheasant in the Corn" and it is one of six designs that we currently offer. We can also provide custom design services, in fact I have done this design with a German Shorthaired Pointer in the past. Our other wood items include picture frames, corkboards, and shelves. They all make great gifts for dog friends as well as treasured trophies and awards that contribute to a memorable doggie day. I also customize products that I sell in my OtterTail Art for Dog Lovers Shop. Here is an example of another Lab show trophy created for LRCP. This is a lovely tile topped box. It is always a pleasure to work with the folks at LRCP (and to go to their shows!) and we wish them great weather and another wonderful event.

Chocolate Lab Wins Rally Classes at Wine Country

I am proud to say my young chocolate Lab, Nissa, won her first 2 Rally classes at the Wine Country circuit dog shows yesterday and today. Both classes had 21 dogs entered, but not the same dogs both days. While I could definitely see room for improvement on both exercises I was also happy that she won and did as well as she did (98 and 99 points out of 100). Nissa turned 19 months old a few days ago, and she still has some of that teenager attitude. I think she worked harder when she was 9 months old. But, I also expect her to grow back into that good work ethic as she matures - they usually do. The best part as far as Nissa was concerned (aside from spending a couple of days out with Mom and getting extra special attention), was that she won 3 bags of gourmet treats today and a cool football toy yesterday that makes a crazy noise. Come Sunday we will all be ready for some football!! Thanks for the nice prizes Onondaga and Kanadasaga Kennel clubs. And thanks for being my sweetie-pie and doing a good job my "Chocolate Muffin", Lobuff OtterTail Noble Nissa.

Black Lab Mix Foster Rescue Dog Gets Adopted

I didn't even get a chance to write about Rowdy and he is gone! Such a sweet soul - rescued from death-row at one kill-shelter in KY by another, but the 2nd could give him more time plus they (Bowling Green Humane Society) have a great arrangement with rescue groups around the east coast. Through that system Rowdy got to come to Rudy's Rescue for Labrador Retrievers in NY and to foster care with us. A sweet, gentle soul who had clearly been someone's dog before, who knows how he came to such misfortune as to be on death-row, but thank goodness he was given another chance.

Rowdy (or, "not the Rowdy" as he became known among friends) is probably 6-8 yrs old and loves affection with people more than anything. Well-behaved in the house except for a few minor marking incidents, he is probably the easiest foster dog I have ever had -- and the shortest! Why is it it works that way?? He is moving in with a gentle woman, a cat that adopted her, and her 95-yr-old father who has always loved dogs. Rowdy will get to keep him company when his new mom is away and he will get to cuddle on the couch with her and sleep in bed. For a dog who lives for affection I think this is a very good match.

Still, fostering is hard. You can't help but get attached and protective for the dogs who share your home and your life, if even for a short time. You want to find the best home for every one of them. And then when you do and they leave - well, even though you are happy for them it is almost like a death in the family. You feel the missing energy. There is a quietness. A loss. I love them all in one way or another and they all affect my life. I hope I affect their lives in a positive way. Good luck on your final voyage Rowdy, my friend. One more home - the last home - to live happily ever after.

Clicker Training Labradors - Fun free-shaping

I just had the most fun clicker training 4 of my dogs. Nissa, my youngest, has energy to burn so she came to me looking to play while the others were sleeping off our walk and the heat of the day. I was on my way out to the garden with my basket to collect vegetables, so I decided to train Nissa to pick up the basket. I had dropped my snips into it, but otherwise it was empty. Nissa looked at it, I clicked and treated (c/t). She touched the handle - c/t. She was progressing well. By the time she got about 5 c/t's the other 3 dogs were there wanting to get in on the action. Two of them are 12 yrs old and 95% deaf at this point, but they have been clicker trained since they were 3 or 4 weeks old. Both of them LOVE training and can still hear a click. As I suspected, after watching 2 c/t's old Eponine dove in and started manipulating the basket like mad. We very quickly progressed to c/t for touching only the handle, then putting mouth on it, then lifting it. All the while 3 other dogs were close to the action. Just as I was laughing at how clever and quick Eponine is still, her brother Marius pushed in and picked up the basket by the handle and handed it to me. LOL! This is not the first time that I have seen one dog learn by watching the others. In fact, the roles were reversed when Marius was clicker trained to bring me all of the dog bowls after meals (beginning when he was 4 weeks old and picked up his bowl). It didn't take long watching him get treats for Eponine and their 9 yr old grandmother, Tegan, to instantly begin picking up bowls and bringing them to me. Neither of them had any training by me at all for that task. Tegan did it daily the rest of her life and Eponine and Marius still bring me bowls everyday. Tallulah has started doing it too.

Back to our session: Eponine and Marius were both involved with the basket now with Nissa and Tallulah still within nose reach. Marius put it down to accept his jackpot reward and Eponine picked it up. So Marius reached in and delivered my clippers to me. That's not really new because sometimes he carries them for me when I'm working outside. Still, c/t for a good deed. Basket back on floor, Marius puts his head under the handle and takes hold of the opposite side so he's wearing it on his head. It looks so cute and funny I have to c/t - even though it's not what I was planning. This is a "trap" I often fall into when training - especially group training. It's so much fun I go with the flow and I love to see what they make up. I got the idea from Karen Pryor's story about teaching the dolphins to be creative when I read "Lads Before the Wind" in 1996 and I have played this with my dogs ever since. Please do not do this if you are looking for efficient, tidy training sessions. But if you don't mind going off track and enjoy creativity it IS lots of fun! I don't want them to destroy my nice basket with their enthusiasm, so I get Marius back on only taking the handle and sure enough, Eponine now puts her head through and picks it up by the other side - just as she had seen him do and earn rewards. Eponine and Marius are now stealing the show and being very silly. I love to see them get so animated at this age, so it's hard to discourage them, but time to let someone else try again. Meanwhile, rescue dog Butch has heard the clicks and joined the pack (all 5 dogs now). He doesn't have a clue, but he does know click means treat and I actually taught him to put his paw in my hand with very casual training over our post-dinner carrots this week. I am impressed with how far he has come and I think he is primed for more but not ready for the group circus yet. I take the basket from my old sillies and put it by Nissa and Tallulah. Tallulah is clever and takes her first chance by touching the handle - c/t. She was paying attention. She looks at me out of the corner of her eye clearly asking "Is this right?" Within 5 c/t's she has picked up the basket by the handle and brought it to me across the kitchen. Good Dog! Nissa - well, I will have to give her a chance by herself again. She has not had as much free-shaping as the others. In fact, Eponine and Marius had the most free-shaping when they were kids. Tallulah is 3 yrs old and has had some, but not as much as they had and Nissa is 17 months and has had less. I know better - free-shaping any behaviors, no matter how silly, makes for a clever willing worker. I have done enough with my younger dogs to make them anxious to participate whenever I offer the opportunity, but more is better!

I did free-shape Nissa to shake her head "no" on cue. Since Nissa has not had a lot of free-shaping she tends to offer that when in doubt. I don't worry about it - if I don't give the cue she doesn't get the c/t and if she is doing it really well I go ahead and give the cue with c/t to reinforce the quality. I am a very casual trainer. I love teaching this way and keeping it fun. I teach all of my dogs to heel by free-shaping and other obedience exercises as well. They are great heelers. Free-shaping and clicker training is not just for tricks. For me and my dogs I treat all exercises the same whether it's precision heeling or carrying my veggie basket. If you make it fun, they do it willingly, with enthusiasm, and they don't forget!

Now the kids are sleeping - having some latent learning - and I will finally go out to collect my veggies from the garden. I used to do group free-shaping clicker session with up to 10 dogs years ago. It was always tons of fun. Think it's time I got back into it. Try it. It's wonderful!

Labs Love to Relax on Porch Deck

My Labrador Retrievers love to relax on the porch deck when we sit outside at lunch or in the evening. Here is a pretty photograph of a black Lab and a chocolate Lab enjoying the view on a summer night. The sun was low making the colors vivid and the lighting sharp. My two youngest Labs are Tallulah and Nissa, shown here keeping watch over their territory (as old Lab Eponine sleeps nearby). They are best buddies and almost always do everything together -- sometimes being called "Ike and Mike".

We just spent the weekend doing lots of earth work and had the top edge of our pond reshaped. It is so much nicer now and the tall weeds are gone, so the view is even prettier. We are overlooking Seneca Lake and OtterTail Pond where the Labradors play everyday. This is the heart of the NY Finger Lakes region and is popular wine country. I am pleased to announce that my "Bearcat Woman" has earned her second title and my first ever Rally title. She is now officially Whitsprgs OtterTail Tallulah, CD, RN. Tallulah earned her first AKC rally obedience leg back in March with a perfect 100 point score and first place in her class. She finished this week with two 99 point scores - one for first place and one for second place. All in all I was very proud of her. Since we have done almost all of our training at home by ourselves, I am proud of myself too. The rally signs do make me nervous! There is lots of information online about Rally (or Rally-O, as it is often called) to help you get started and a nice Rally Group on Yahoo if you would like to discuss questions. You can download the official AKC regulations too. There are other clubs that offer competitions for mixed breed dogs, so everyone can play. Mostly it is another fun thing to do with your dog and leads to nice days out together when you are ready to compete. The more you teach your dogs, the smarter they become! Happy Birthday Yellow & Black Labs

Happy Birthday Marius and Eponine!! They are 12 yrs old today. Named for favorite singer/characters in the celebration concert of Les Miserables, my Marius and Eponine are the last babies from my last litter. They are beautiful with soft temperaments, bidable, smart, loving and the sweetest Labs you might ever hope to meet. It has been my joy to spend the past 12 years with them and I hope for many more. Big Marius was squishing sister Eponine in the womb and he still squishes her now -- but she seems to like it and be comfortable with his big yellow body draped over hers. They have always been good friends. For a time Marius became best buddies with Obi and Eponine was very close with their mom, Gwendolyn. But with Obi and Gwen both across Rainbow Bridge, Marius and Eponine still have each other and still enjoy each other's company. Marius is a mild mannered gentleman who follows my every move. His silliest trick is one he invented - a Stevie Wonder immitation (clicker trained with the cue "Stevie"). Eponine was my first to learn to shake her head "no" on the cue "You wouldn't do that, would you?". She announces every important turn of events with a "roo roo" and has long been the head of fashion police. Every morning she comes to inspect the clothes I am putting on to see it they are "play clothes" or meant for going out and she reports to the rest of the pack. There is no fooling her with my plans for the day! Both are excellent at keeping everything off the floor that does not belong there by retrieving it to me - no matter what the humans may have intended. They have accepted many foster dogs, a few long term adoptees, a stray cat, and a couple of new puppies. They welcome everyone with their gentle spirits and help me teach the new dogs the ways of the pack. I have been blessed to know and share my life with these 2 wonderful souls - descendants of the beauties that came before them.

Now it's time for the party. We had a good dog walk and play at the pond despite the rainy, cool day. A carrot treat and a nap -- now it's time for riping open new nylabones (unpackaging can be more fun than the bone itself!), rawhides, liver with dinner and whatever else makes them happy on their special day. Happy Birthday my dears - I love you!!! XOXOX

Much Loved (or Dogs with favorite animal friends)

They are a bedraggled crew, but still much loved. They have been carried, slept on, left out in the rain and snow and mud, shaken and tugged, ripped and sewn. Pink bunny has only 1 badly torn ear left, 1 leg and no eyes. She was a post Easter sale bunny in 2008 - just in time for my Nissa puppy to join the pack and still one of Nissa's favorites. Froggy is missing an eye and poor Ducky has only 1 wing, no feet, 1 eye and a patch over her quacker. They taught our puppy mill foster puppy how to play and we all still love the ribit and quacking noises they make. Oldest of all is the mighty reindeer. He is at least 25 years old now! He was a fancy stuffed animal gift to my husband back when we were caribou biologists in Alaska. When Tallulah joined the pack as a pup in January 2006 she eyed the precious reindeer until Jim finally gave in. She was relentless in shaking him by his leg and he bears the wounds to prove it. He has no antlers left and only 1 ear, his eyes are scratched and his coat is worn, but after 3 years of "tough love" he continues to be amazingly strong. Hang in there animals - I can't bring myself to throw you away and will continue to stitch as long as you can bear it. Yes, new toys are always fun, but there are those special ones who deserve to stay around even if visitors wonder why I keep such a sorry lot. Thanks for the memories.

Black Lab Birthday - Happy Rescue Dog

Happy Birthday Butch! He is 7 yrs old today and looking better than ever. I adopted Butch last June (2008) on the spur of the moment. His life-long owner had been in a terrible accident and would never be coming home or be able to care for a dog again. None of the local rescue groups had room or were willing to take an older large black male Labrador with skin problems and hip dysplasia. Butch could not go on living alone in a house with only 2 visits each day, so I drove out and got him. Here he is almost a year later and we think he has done pretty well for himself! Before he was happy, but he rarely went for walks - or anywhere since his owner was a recluse - and he had no dog friends or spent much time with people either. Here he enjoys daily romps with 4 or more other Labs and gets to go to hunting camp with "Daddy Jim" where they have many adventures. His previous owner never gave him any discipline because he was afraid Butch would not love him -- but since living here he has learned a lot. He had been inadvertently trained to do the opposite of what anyone said because they would quickly reach for biscuits to bribe him. It has been a hard habit to break and we are not finished yet, but he has made great progress. Mostly he is very well behaved and a sweet guy to have around. For the first 2 months he chose to spend most of his time alone in the coat closet and did not know about making eye contact or really relating to people. Now he is part of the family and eye contact on cue has been one of his best lessons. He has very sweet, soft brown eyes. Along the way I discovered that he was a sucker for cuddling and kisses - I don't think he got much of that before. Now every morning he asks me for hugs, kisses, nunus and ear rubs. Butch was the name he came with, but it hardly fits such a mild-mannered boy. He still does have a naughty side and somewhere along the way earned the name "B Quad" (as in B to the 4th) which stands for Big, Black, Bad Butch. Happy Birthday B Quad -- you old sweetie pie.

Painted Chair Donated for Auction, Keuka Lake, NY

And now for something completely different! I painted this chair for the Yates County NY Chair-ish Keuka Lake auction to benefit Yates ARC (which helps people with disabilities). I call it "Sunset by the Lake". It is a very large adirondack rocking chair. As soon as I saw it I thought it would be a great place to sit with a glass of wine watching the sun set over the lake, so I painted a scene to fit the mood. All of the chairs painted by area artists will be on display at various locations and then auctioned off at a gala event at Keuka College on July 12th from 12-4:00 pm. This was a new challenge for me and nice to give my time in a new way.

Old Black Lab Gets Adopted

It is with great pleasure that I am here to say my old foster dog, Shadow, has found himself one more wonderful home to live out his days happily ever after. Shadow is a sweet and wise old soul - the type who gives the impression this is not his first time around through life. He is now living in a loving family with another senior dog and 4 cats. It is great news, but a little bittersweet too because we have all come to love Shadow and miss him in our home. I am sure he will be happy and a good buddy to the other dog. Plus, there is already another senior black Lab waiting for a foster home, so we expect to welcome him in a few days. Live long and be happy Shadow! It was a pleasure getting to know you.

OtterTail Labrador Wins Again

Having been foolish (or senile) enough to forget to brag about my Whitsprgs OtterTail Tallulah, CD last summer when she earned her AKC Companion Dog obedience title by winning two High In Trial awards and a third place I had to post today to make amends to her. Yesterday Tallulah won her Rally Novice class with the only perfect 100 point score amoung 27 dogs entered. It was my first ever attempt at Rally-O. I knew Tallulah could do it, but was not so sure about myself and all those confusing signs! I managed and Tallulah did great - deserving her mug shot here on my blog. Tallulah is a fun Lab and a real social butterfly who is sure the world revolves around her, so she really shines when she is in the spotlight.

I am doing things backward by getting her Rally title after her Companion Dog title, but I have known how to show for a CD for 20 years. Rally is new for us. Next time I will do it in the right order and that will be starting with my chocolate Nissa later this year.

Dog Training Tips - Feeding the pack

My own dogs learn the rules of proper etiquette at meals from the time they are young puppies. I feed them all in my kitchen at the same time, each from their own bowl. When I rescue dogs or take in fosters they all learn to follow the pack rules. It is more of a challenge for some than others, but all of them have learned to eat peacefully along side the rest of the dogs.

My feeding rules in general are - All dogs lie calmly while meals are being prepared (a struggle for some new dogs, but they learn). When food is ready they go to their spots and wait as I put the bowls down - in the same order in the same places every meal - new dog last. (New dogs have their first meals in crates or x-pens in the great room so I can assess their attitude and they feel comfortable while getting to know the rest of us.) No one is allowed to approach anyone else's bowl until that dog walks away. The first bowl down is usually finished before I put the last bowl down because I also make them each do something before getting their food (and being Labs, they eat quickly leaving no atom behind!). A new dog at first has to sit and make eye contact and not approach any other dog's bowl. Then they may have to down and wait, or let me check ears and teeth, or whatever little thing I think they need to learn - but starting easy and progressing in difficulty over time. One dog I rescued was food aggressive, so he progressed to sit and wait with his bowl on the floor and make eye contact. If he failed I simply pick the bowl up for a second and he corrected himself and we tried again. In the beginning he tried barking to boss me I turn my back on him, making eye contact impossible for a few seconds. Since he had previously learned he had to make eye contact before being rewarded, he corrected himself and tried harder when I turn to face him again. For my own dogs we do more advanced obedience stuff or silly tricks. The older they are the less they have to do.

The Labs that I bred and owned for many years were all softies and very obliging; taking pride in doing the "right thing". That's the personality I prefer; it fits my easy-going training and life style. But some of the rescue and foster dogs have more dominant attitudes and different histories, so need more discipline as well as clear step by step training rituals. If you have a dog that is food aggressive, please use caution. I have experience and a pack of well-behaved dogs setting good examples at meal time. The best way to avoid such problems is to control the food and the attitude from the beginning. I don't like the strict "no free lunch" approach to living with dogs, but you have to do what the dog needs to get your point across. I adapt my training to fit each dog and each situation and everyone eats peacefully. A few of my dogs retrieve all of the bowls for me when everyone is finished - a fun way to end each meal.

Senior Dog Comes to Lab Rescue

Meet Shadow. This old man is my new foster dog. Shadow lived with one owner his whole life, but when he had to go into a nursing home Shadow had no where to turn. He is 10 1/2 years old and, like most old dogs, thinks he knows everything! Still, being a typical Lab, he is willing to please and conform to new rules. Shadow has impressed me with his adaptability. Despite having lived with just one man and then home alone with caretakers stopping by for the past couple of months, he began melding into my pack of 5 dogs on the first day and gets along with everyone - including the cat. He lies with the rest of them as I prepare meals and eats side by side without issue and seems to like everybody. He is a smart old man who taught himself how to use the dog door on the first day and has enjoyed the freedom of taking himself out to lie on the dog deck or coming inside to a comfy bed. He has a few problems - a bum elbow that causes him to limp, he is a bit hard of hearing, his teeth are worn down to nubs, and he carries way too many extra pounds. Except for the latter none of it seems to slow him down and we are working on the weight. He is a happy dog, still full of life. Shadow has been with us for 2 weeks now and we are already getting attached. He is getting neutered today and I find myself worrying about as much as I do for my own dogs. Fostering dogs is a tough job!

Much to my surprize there is a loving woman interested in adopting Shadow and giving him one more forever home. It touches my heart and, if it works out, I think it will be because Shadow has excellent karma for having patiently lived with and loved an owner who he slowly watched lose his capacities. Send good wishes for this sweet old dog - he deserves it.

Training Tips: Labradors Underfoot

Labradors love their people and are often clingy and underfoot. Wanting to be with me where ever I am is one of the things I find endearing about my Labs, but I do not want them to trip me or inhibit my movement. This picture from a few years ago shows some of my dogs "helping" us put up a fence so we can keep them out of my garden (they raid the veggies!). As you can see, they decided it was their job to hold down the dirt dug for the post hole.

Labs need to learn not to get underfoot. Do it as a training lesson. Personally I am a clicker trainer, but there are many ways to teach anything. Here is one way: Using your calm, assertive energy walk toward him - into him if necessary - and tell him "move" (or whatever cue you want to use). As he moves praise and reward him with a treat. Repeat many times. Soon he will understand what "move" means and give you your space. You can teach him "get back" = back up, "away" = move away from the area, or whatever else you think of that might be handy. The more you words you teach him the better it will be for all of you.

I teach mine to stay "out of my zone" at the stove when I am cooking - they line up along the opposite side and that's fine - it's like an invisible line. I don't tell them they have to be there. It's not a "down, stay" - they are free to go do what ever they want. But, if they want to be near me when I am cooking they must stay out of my zone and most of them choose to lie as close as is permitted which is at the invisible edge. If someone drops a glass and they run in thinking to lick whatever spilled I stop them from getting near broken glass (or whatever) with my "away" cue. And they all learn "move" so I don't stumble over them. They also know to lie out of the way when I carry in groceries -- everyone gets a piece of carrot once I am finished. They are always with me, lie on my feet or on my lap and follow me everywhere (including to the bathroom), but they are not allowed to be dangerously underfoot.

Don't wait until your need these behaviors or your dog is tripping you. Teach them as a training lesson when you have time to focus. Give your dog your undivided attention for those few minutes and make sure he gives you his. Repetition is key to getting the cue word associated with the action. Doing it this way can make it a fun game for everyone and you have some very handy cues when you need them.

New Funny Labrador Retriever Drawing

I wanted to create a simple, cute, funny and appealing Labrador Retriever drawing that I could adapt repeatedly to different designs and use in multiple ways. I came up with this guy. What do you think?

I have made him in this black version as well as yellow and chocolate with 2 sets of words. One says "Lab = Love" and "Support Labrador Retriever Rescue" underneath and the other says "I Need A Home To Call My Own" with "Adopt a Labrador Retriever" underneath. I made both available on a large assortment of products in my OtterTail Art for Dog Lovers Shop. The section dedicated to Rudy's Rescue has both versions and the special section for LabMed has the latter wording. 100% of profits from all sales in both of these sections are donated to the respective non-profit Lab rescue groups.

I would like to make another version available in my general store and am wondering what wording, if any, I should include. I would love it if some of you would leave feedback regarding which you would prefer - design with no words or with words (maybe Lab = Love as shown here or something else by itself). If you have a suggestion of words you would like to see, please share that too! Training Tips: Barking to order dinner

Some dogs learn to bark as a way to boss people around. This guy is a Lab I rescued from a shelter in KY. He came to me about 30 lbs overweight, had been "the man's dog" and made it clear he had no respect for women. He had learned to boss those in his previous home to giving him food (and whatever he wanted) on demand. I have dealt with a few rescue dogs who barked before dinner. I like to train with operant conditioning - which lets the dog think he is training you and is an effective, positive approach to fixing problem behaviors with bossy dogs (works great on submissive dogs too). Your timing is important in all kinds of training and is critical for dogs to get the message. You can use a clicker or not (read more about clicker training online. I like Karen Pryor's site at: www.ClickerTraining.com). Another tip I will interject here is the use of the word "Wrong" (which I learned from Gary Wilkes). It is said in a non-emotional, normal, quiet voice and it means "that behavior will not be reinforced, please try again". It is not the same as "No" - which means "Stop it!". Keep your cues and signals clear and unique if you want your dog to learn quickly.

Let's pretend you do not have a clicker, but want to start getting control of barking before the next meal. You are getting ready to feed your boisterous boy and he starts barking - perfect time to say "wrong", and go sit down and ignore him. If this is the first time you have ever used the word "wrong", do not expect him to understand it at all. It is meaningless to him right now. But, keep using it and he will learn by association so that it will become very meaningful in the future. Just remember to use it consistently and not interchangeably with "NO"! When you sit down and ignore him you should get a response to your behavior - it may not happen instantly, but the dog will stop barking. He stops, you say "good" or "good quiet" (if you want to teach the cue "quiet" you can teach it by association this way) and get up to go feed again. Barking resumes - say "wrong", go sit down again. Eventually he will stop barking more quickly and you can progress to stopping in your tracks instead of going back to sit down. When he stops barking say "good quiet" and move forward to proceed with feeding. Do not command "quiet!" while his is barking - he doesn't know what it means yet and you will just be yelling over him. Get the behavior first, then attach the cue. Continue this little dance of moving forward when he is quiet and stopping in your tracks or backing up and sitting down when he barks. Shortly your dog will learn he is controlling your actions with his behavior. You only progress toward the desired destination (dinner prep) when he is quiet. He barks-you stop, he's quiet-you proceed. He is the "operator" - that is the heart of operant conditioning. It is very powerful; we all want to feel we have some control of things that happen to us and this makes the message very clear to dogs because you are communicating in a jointly understood language. We all learn fast this way because the feedback is meaningful. As in all training, don't expect perfection the 1st time, but build on it with each session and have lots of successful sessions.

Some trainers don't like the idea of pairing the praise with the cue (e.g. "good quiet"), but it works for me. I do it both ways. Leave out the cue if you are in that camp. However, if your dog is just being quiet on his own during the day, telling him "good quiet" then will not be meaningful to him and will dilute or negate it as a cue, so remember to make your use of words relevant if you want to teach your dog to understand your language.

BTW, this guy learned quickly that he was not going to get fed when he bossed me. He is a dominant, very smart dog who gave me many challenges and taught me a lot. He still prefers men, but he respects everyone now - as long as they are a Pack Leader.

BARK! The herald angels sing - everyone join the chorus! I love my Christmas houses, but a house just isn't a home for me if there is no dog and every dog deserves a loving home. So, over the years I have added a number of dogs to OtterTail Village - black Labs, yellow Labs and chocolate Labs, of course! This picture shows five of them gathering for a romp and howl. Three more dogs are off playing and I sculpted reindeer for my Santa's barn and sheep for the wool shop too. You can see some of my larger Labrador Retriever sculptures by visiting my OtterTail Lab Art website. All were inspired by my own OtterTail Labrador Retrievers. As you will have guessed by now, Labradors are a big part of my life and I am thankful for the joy they bring. Sing along with the pack. Rescue Lab Home for the Holidays

Happy news for Sally, my latest foster dog. She has been adopted by a wonderful family with a new Mom and Dad and 2 kids of her own and she moved in just in time for Thanksgiving. I think she had a lot to be thankful for indeed! And I am thrilled for her that she is settling in and beginning her new life with her best paw forward.
I wish that everyone would remember all of the animals in need this holiday season and help them in any small way you can. Every little bit makes a difference. Whether it is purchasing products that donate to dog rescue, donating directly to non-profit groups that help such as Rudy's Rescue for Labrador Retrievers, adopting or fostering dogs yourself, or donating blankets, dog products or your time to the local shelter, every little bit truly does make a difference. New Labrador Retriever Portrait Painting

This is my latest yellow Labrador Retriever portrait painting. It is a custom Christmas gift a thoughtful client commissioned for their dog lover friend. I sure hope he likes it! The owner and his dog were both described as bachelors, so the request was made for masculine background colors. I am always happy to do whatever I can to make each portrait just what the customer wants! The glow at the top is funny lighting on my photo, not on the painting. Sally is full of energy and had her own ideas about chasing the family goats at her previous home. Rather than keep her tied for life her owners decided it was best to let her go to find a new home. I try to test every page on several browsers before uploading, but I have a new glitch this time. My version of Internet Explorer is quite old and they no longer seem to be making a version for Macs. I am having trouble with my new Labrador Retriever paintings page. If anyone reading this uses IE, please take a moment to test my links and let me know your results. It's past time I check in - doggone it, time flies! It has been a busy summer and I am currently wrapped up in totally rebuilding my OtterTail Lab Art website and changing servers. I hope to get this well along before the end of the month and get back to making art! Please check back and better yet, check in on my website regularly to see and test the changes. I appreaciate any and all comments. As I get the new pages posted please let me know if you have any problems with it loading or not looking right or links not working. Right now I am making minor changes that you can see, but behind the scenes everything is in a wild jumble - like my two youngest Labs bouncing off the walls, careening around the corners and using the couch as a launching pad, I hope it will look good and behave well when the dust clears! Labrador Dogs follow a good Pack Leader

Labrador Retrievers, like all dogs, love a good pack leader. Here is a new design featuring black Labs, yellow Labs and chocolate Labs. Labrador Retriever Rescue - Help When You Can

Sometimes in life you have to do what you can when you can. That is how this 7-yr old black boy came to join our pack. His name is Butch and his solitary owner was involved in a serious accident, leaving him in extended IC and possibly paralyzed for life. Butch was lucky to have an "uncle" who drove over twice daily to care for him following the tragedy, but that could not go on. Even a Lab used to living a reclusive life needs more attention in the long term. The loving uncle contacted Butch's vet, who made other contacts and a plea went out over the rescue network. I forwarded it to the group I volunteer with and several others, but everyone is full this year. Poor Butch had no where to go. So - I brought him here. I am fortunate to be in the position to help him right now. I don't want to count how many times over the years I have shuddered to think what would happen to all of my dogs if tragedy stuck my husband and me. I offered my home to Butch wishing that all dogs in such situations could have someone willing to take them in and give them a new loving home. I can only imagine what it feels like from the dog's point of view -- one day your beloved person just does not come home and you never seen them again. For so many dogs this ends up with a trip to a shelter and, especially for older, large, black dogs - who are the most difficult to place - it often means an unhappy end. But not Butch!! I am happy to say he is settling in. He enjoys my 4 other Labs and is fine with our cat. He is a gentleman in the house and really lights up when we go for our daily walks and swims in the pond. It warms my heart to see him becoming more comfortable every day. We wish for a miracle recovery by his "Dad" and, if that happens, I will happily give Butch back. I know how I would feel!!! Until that time Butch can live happily ever after here with us and we give thanks for being in a position to help when we can. Please consider offering your love and home to a dog in need. They ask for so little and you can truly save a life.

Chocolate Lab Puppy Joins OtterTail Labradors

Introducing our wonderful new addition!! I have not posted in a while and she is why. I am thrilled to announce the arrival of Lobuff OtterTail Noble Nissa to our happy OtterTail Labrador home. Thank you Lisa Weiss for giving me the opportunity to have such a wonderful girl! Nissa was born on the 20th anniversary of my own very first litter, making her special indeed. My last litter was nearly 11 years ago, so this new Lab puppy brings great joy. It is also very nice to have a chocolate Labrador Retriever in our family again. My very first Lab (first purebred dog) was a chocolate Lab named Holly - she changed my life and was the instigator of all the rest of my involvement with Labs, inclucing my OtterTail Lab Art. Nissa is a beautiful girl who's name means "a sign", which is in keeping with her special birth date. It is also the name of a character from Dr. Who back in the 1980's who was pretty, sweet and very smart. As a side note for Whovarians - I have also had a Leela and a Tegan - 2 very wonderful yellow Lab girls! And my Leela was just as gung-ho as the doctor's!! I will surely have to write about both of them in the future. They are over Rainbow Bridge now, but many fond memories remain. Check back to see my wonderful Nissa as she grows!

Lab Rescue leads to Happy Labrador Adoption

Our sweet foster rescue Lab puppy, Eli, was happily adopted 3 weeks ago and is adjusting well. How could you not love that adorable yellow Labrador Retriever face? Eli came such a long way in the time he spent with us, it is wonderful to see him move on to his forever home and continue to grow and learn. I joked that he made it "from barn to bed" in one week, and his progress grew from there! He learned to walk nicely on a loose leash, even sitting whenever I stopped, he learned to sit, down, and come on cue, to make eye contact and give kisses. There were SO MANY new things - stairs, crates, car rides - it was a joy to watch him blossom. He even learned to voluntarily jump into the dog shower for a bath after our daily muddy walks and stand quietly for washing. He especially loved being dried - it was like having a massage! I think he is a hose dog in the making - I admit I have a soft spot for hose dogs! Eli is still a bit shy of strangers, but he is responding well to all of the new challenges. He has a dog loving family and we know he will have a very happy life. We do look forward to visits from Eli and his new "pack" in the future! Yellow Labrador Retriever Portrait Painting

This smiling yellow Labrador Retriever was a fun portrait to paint. Her name is Chamois and she travels internationally with her family. That is an exciting lifestyle for a rescue dog! Chamois has what is known as "dudley" pigment - her nose and eye rims are pink rather than the desired black. But she is still a cutie and a wonderful Lab. Who could resist that big, silly smile?! Labrador Retriever Rescue Dogs Need Your Love

Meet our newest foster dog. He is a 5 month old yellow Lab we are calling Eli (to commemorate the NY football Giant's superbowl win). I am fostering him for Rudy's Rescue, a non-profit group based in Rochester, NY. Eli came from a puppy mill where he lived in a barn with lots of other dogs and little human interaction. When I picked him up he was terrified of everything, but after a warm bath and yummy meal you could almost see his little mind opening. This is only his 4th day with us, but he is coming out of his shell and progressing quickly. Eli is a sweet guy with lots of potential. He enjoys playing with toys and the 3 other Labrador Retrievers who live here now. They set excellent examples for any Labrador puppy to follow and learn. Black Lab Painting with Wine and Friends

It has been way too long since my last post, but at least it is because I have been happily busy. The holidays and new year were celebrated and enjoyed, custom Lab Art commissions continue to entertain and challenge me, and I have added new experiences to my daily routine - most notably, playing along with Namaste Yoga on FitTv every morning. I love it! My OtterTail dogs are all well and we are on the downhill side of winter. The year is fresh with great new adventures.
Between custom portraits and art projects I did squeeze in one painting just for fun. This latest version of "Wine is Best Shared with Friends" is a black Lab painting (or any black dog) done in my most simple style. It is acrylic on watercolor paper and has been donated to Labrador Life Line for the annual Labor of Love Auction. This is an on-line auction fund-raising event that I hope will draw many generous bidders. Your shopping for Lab-related items will donate money for Labrador Retrievers in need. The auction runs Feb. 8th through the 23rd, 2008. I have also donated a fine art giclee print of my yellow Lab painting titled "A Head Pillow is Nice". Yellow Labrador Hunting Dog Painting

Here is one of my most recent Labrador Retriever paintings. If you have been reading along you may recognize this as our oldest yellow Lab, Dave (aka "Pumpkin Dave") who crossed Rainbow Bridge in August. Shhhh, it's a Christmas present for my husband. I wanted to capture Dave's big smile and happy Labrador spirit in bold colors and a fun, impressionistic painting style. He was a happy dog. Jim missed him at camp this season and ended up wearing Dave's camo bandana himself - for luck. Even macho guys can have a soft spot for a Labrador. I hope he likes his Christmas painting!

I know I have been lax about writing in my blog. I want to draw interest to my dog paintings and Labrador art and then I get busy and don't make time to write. I will have to do better in 2008! Right now I am working on a custom order for a January wedding as well as finishing a quilted table runner as a Christmas gift for friends. I am also starting an exciting commission of a yellow Labrador Retriever portrait that is requested to be bright and silly in a more abstract painting style. Other projects for early 2008 include illustrations for a stream guide and portraits of 2 Golden Retrievers. Sounds like a great way to start the year!

We all ate well, drank good wine, watched football and gave thanks for our many blessings. Helen is a rescue cat who turned up under a box on the porch at Jim's camp 5 years ago. She mostly tolerates us and conspires to make us wait on her every whim, but I know deep down she is thankful to live here. Fishing Labrador Retriever Design in Wood

We have been cutting my OtterTail Lab Art designs in wood items since 1987. This is my Fishing Dog design. Others include Diving Dog, Dog in Cattails which features birds in flight, Pheasant in the Corn, Swimming Dog, and Friends. You can see some examples of our Labrador dogs in wood on my OtterTail Labrador Art website. We use only quality hardwoods - primarily cherry, maple and black walnut, finished with a hand-rubbed oil to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Every design is hand drawn and individually cut with a scroll saw, so we can take into account the unique grain on each piece of wood and easily customize pieces for special gifts for dog lovers. This picture shows a cherry peg rack which will be a trophy at the up-coming Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Bare Bones Specialty 2007. Other trophies for this year's show include a black walnut peg rack with my Diving Dog design and cherry and black walnut cork boards with my 3 Friends design. Adopt a Rescue Labrador Retriever - or foster one!

Meet Jake - our current foster dogs. He is a purebred black Labrador Retriever who was saved from a kill-shelter in Kentucky. Jake is 6 years old and the poor guy was surrendered by his elderly owner who felt they could no longer take care of him. It's a shame, because that owner had obviously been doing a good job. Unlike most shelter dogs, Jake came to us in excellent shape. He is very fit, has clean teeth and ears and a shiny coat. Jake is a gentle sweetheart and I hate to think he might have been killed for lack of another home. He gets along well with our other dogs and cat. He is house trained and crate trained, and not at all destructive. Unfortunately, large black dogs are the least likely to be adopted, so we may be fostering Jake for some time to come. Jake is a neutered male, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative, and lovable in many ways! We are volunteering for a Lab rescue group based in Rochester, NY called Rudy's Rescue for Labrador Retrievers. The area we cover is quite large, although we do require home checks for all potential foster homes and adopters. But we also work with other rescue groups who can do home checks for people out of our immediate area. If you are interested in helping these wonderful dogs in need, please contact Rudy's Rescue through our web site or any of the many other rescue groups working to save homeless dogs all across the country.

Dog Show Trophies and Custom Gifts

I have been providing custom pieces for dog show trophies, judges gifts, and awards for about 20 years. This example is a tile-topped wood box created for the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Bare Bones Specialty Show coming up in October. These boxes are provided by and tiles printed by my professional print-on-demand company. In this case I supply the custom artwork to be applied to a wide variety of products. Most of the Labrador and dog show trophies we have created over the years have been original pieces made by my husband and me - particularly our wood OtterTail Lab Art items. Training Tips for Labrador Retrievers and other dogs

For years I have been writing training tips in articles, letters and emails. I thought it was about time to make my efforts available to anyone who might just need the tips I have to offer, so here is my first entry. Please note, I am NOT soliciting questions - I volunteer tons of time to a Lab rescue organization adopters, fosters and friends. The tips shared here are free for the taking .. or not - as always, use your own best judgement regarding whether my tips fit your needs and never do anything with your dog that makes you uncomfortable. There are many ways to approach every training situation. Mainly, like my Labs themselves, I like to have fun! There will be no particular order to my training posts. Some will be for puppies and/or first time dog owners and some will be for experienced trainers, dog sport competitors, and rescue dog rehabilitaters. So here we go!

(Names will be changed to protect the guilty :-).)
Problem: Nora is ignoring the chewies and her designated stuff in favor of tearing up pillows, her crate bed, and other soft items. Sometimes she retrieves the items, sometimes she shreds them. We scold her for ripping the pillows, but she still does.

Tip: That's typical for a young Lab. They do have a high need for human attention. If chewing and playing with her own toys gets ignored, but tearing up pillows gets attention - even if negative - then pillows it will be. I suggest you play with the Nora's toys with her, and tell her how wonderful they are and make a fuss when she is doing the "right thing". If she only gets noticed when she is being naughty, then she will be naughty. And it all starts innocently - she rips a pillow as a puppy mistake and it gets lots of attention vs. she bites her bone and no one notices because she is being good and owners don't realize they need to "make note" that she IS being good. Labs are needy. It is important to make a little celebration about all of her good behaviors at first - not just ignore them. Labs love to be praised - that little effort you take to tell them when they are just being good, whether it's being quiet, chewing a bone, sleeping in their crate, whatever - that little positive reinforcement can make all the difference for a Lab - especially a puppy. It takes concerted effort and training for most people because it is so easy to ignore them when they are being good or think "phew, the Lab is finally quiet" and not make note of it to the Lab. But that is what they really need - that is what they thrive on. The "secret" to Labs is that they are needy - pay attention to the behaviors you want to see more of, because you will see more of the behaviors you pay attention to!

Another Wonderful Labrador Crosses Rainbow Bridge

We said good-bye to our oldest dog, Dave, on 17 August after 15 happy years. Pumpkin Dave, as he was affectionately known, is running fast again - his favorite activity - over Rainbow Bridge. This picture was taken during one of his last stays at my husband's hunting camp. He wore his camo dogdanna so he would fit in with the boys. You can see by the Labrador smile on his face that it was a fun time for him, even in his old age. We will miss you Pun'kin Dave, but we know you are happy to be running again. Run like the Wind!!!

Our Oldest Labrador Retriever

Happy Birthday, Dave! On Sunday, 8 July 2007, our OtterTail Decathlon Dave celebrated his 15th birthday. Dave is our longest living Lab (or any dog) to date, although he is not the oldest OtterTail. Maggie, a Labrador puppy from my first litter, lived to 16 years, 10 1/2 months. Our old man, who has always been affectionately call "Punkin' Dave", spends most of his time sleeping these days. We will continue to wait on his every need as long as he wants to stay with us. He enjoyed some grilled steak and extra carrots (his real favorite) as birthday treats. Dave, as his name suggests, was born during the 1992 olympics. Though he was named for the decathlete, Dave Johnson (which also happened to be the name of a friend of ours), his very favorite "event" was running. When Dave was younger he loved to run as fast as he could for as long as he could. Then he would catch his breath and run some more. He would have been an olympic runner if he could. Happy Birthday, Dave - we all love you!

Patriotic Dogs - Fun For All

Happy Independence Day to US friends celebrating the 4th of July! Here is my patriotic "Go Fast Dog" starting the festivities early. He's running to spread joy like many Labrador Retrievers do just for fun. This silly dog is a stars and stripes digital manipulation of my original drawing. The red, white and blue design is available on t-shirts, clothing, mugs and other products in my OtterTail Art for Dog Lovers Shop and comes in different colors for holidays and everyday. He can also be found stealing Santa's hat in popular black Lab, yellow Lab and chocolate Lab versions in the holiday section of my shop. May we all feel the joy of living and value our freedom the way well-loved Labrador Retrievers do!

Adopt a Rescue Dog

This is my current foster dog, Molly Sue. I am fostering her for Rudy's Rescue which is a Labrador Retriever rescue group based in Rochester, NY. I don't know how much Lab she has in her (she is a hound-doggy mix), but she is a real sweetie who was saved from a kill shelter in Kentucky. She is barely 6 months old and will make some family a wonderful companion. She is as affectionate and attentive as a good Labrador and likes to swim in our pond. At barely 30 lbs she is not the least bit timid to 'run with the big dogs'. I like this silly picture of her. She reminds us of the cute black sister to the Grinch's dog, Max, (as drawn by Dr. Seuss) so for fun we are calling her Molly Sue Who.

She has had lots of training since she arrived and that alone would make her adoption price worthwhile. Add in the fact that she is such a fun little dog and that 100% of the donation goes to help save other dogs in need and it is clear that adopting a rescue dog is a great way to find a good friend and make a difference. Wherever you are there are dogs needing loving homes and rescue groups working to save them.

I plan to make some new Labrador Retriever and dog paintings to help raise funds for Rudy's Rescue. Check back for sneak peaks and updates.
